{"id":921,"date":"2020-06-05T11:51:24","date_gmt":"2020-06-05T16:51:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/flmi.local\/?p=921"},"modified":"2025-10-28T16:36:58","modified_gmt":"2025-10-28T21:36:58","slug":"access-to-education","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/familylegacy.com\/access-to-education\/","title":{"rendered":"Access To Education"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In Zambia, education is a powerful tool\u2014but it\u2019s not guaranteed for every child.<\/p>\n<h4>\ud83d\udcca Education Snapshot: Zambia 2024<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Transition to secondary school:<\/strong> Only <strong>56.3%<\/strong> of Grade 7 students transitioned to Grade 8<\/li>\n<li><strong>Completion of Grade 12:<\/strong> Only\u00a0<strong>40%\u00a0<\/strong>of school-age children complete secondary school<\/li>\n<li><strong>Out-of-school children:<\/strong> Approximately <strong>500,000 children<\/strong> of school age are not enrolled<\/li>\n<li><strong>Gender gap:<\/strong> Girls are less likely to complete secondary school<\/li>\n<li><strong>Teacher-to-pupil ratio:<\/strong> Averaging <strong>1 teacher for every 47 pupils<\/strong> in primary schools<\/li>\n<li><strong>Infrastructure challenges:<\/strong> Over <strong>40% of schools lack adequate sanitation facilities<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Dropout rates:<\/strong> Higher among vulnerable children due to poverty, early marriage, and lack of support<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>While the government has made strides in expanding free education, many children still face barriers that keep them out of the classroom. Poverty, long travel distances, overcrowded schools, and lack of resources all contribute to the challenge.<\/p>\n<h5>Barriers Children Face<\/h5>\n<p>Even with free tuition, many children struggle to attend school because of:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Lack of transportation<\/strong> to distant schools<\/li>\n<li><strong>Overcrowded classrooms<\/strong> and teacher shortages<\/li>\n<li><strong>Limited access to books, uniforms, and supplies<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Family responsibilities<\/strong> or economic pressure to work<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These challenges are especially severe for children who are <a href=\"https:\/\/familylegacy.com\/who-is-a-vulnerable-or-orphaned-child\/\"><em>orphaned or vulnerable<\/em><\/a>.
